Eugene Louis Corbett was born in Winona, Minnesota on October 25, 1913. Of Irish-Polish descent, he attended high school in St. Paul, Minnesota, hwere he lettered in baseball and basketball, was baseball captain one year and basketball captain two years.

Gene says he got one hit in his first professional game which was the opener, and ever since he has been unable to get more than one hit in any opening game. Seems like a fixed habit.
